Yom Hashoa- Holocaust Remembrance Day

Today is Yom Hashoa-the Holocaust Remembrance Day.

I light candles for the Friebrun and Einleger families, wiped out entirely by the Nazis.

My mother’s parents, brother, sister, brother-in-law and newborn.

My father’s parents, sister, brothers, sister-in-law and 8 years old nephew.

It’s a day filled with pain and rage that has been haunting me all my life.

But it’s also a day to honor those righteous individuals who stood up against racism, bigotry and antisemitism. Such individual was Gino Bartali. I’m honored to tell his heroic story of courage in The Brave Cyclist: The True Story of a Holocaust Hero.

This illustration from my book, created by Chiara Fedele, depicts the dark time in Italy when Mussolini collaborated with Hitler and declared hateful laws against Italian Jews.
