If You Give a Kid a Crayon

 

As a participating author / illustrator in ArtsWestchester, I get to conduct innovative programs in elementary schools throughout Westchester County.

The first session always starts with curious bright eyes staring at me and lots of, “Ms. what are we gonna do today?”

After the boxed breakfasts are consumed and the milk is spilled and the name roster is read and the coats are hung on labeled hooks and everyone pees and we face the red white & blue and touch our hearts and recite the pledge of allegiance, we finally get to “Do Art.”

I am always amazed how the crayons are grabbed as if they were candy and kids take no time at all to dig into the creative process.

Paper, glue, glitter, rhinestones, bits of scrapes and toilet paper rolls are transformed in the precious twenty minutes that we have till the end of the “Art Period.”

Super heroes and green monsters, good guys and bad guys emerge.

They “Talk” to their creators and the creators beg,“Can I take it home?”

Alas, it’s time to write each name on the back of “The Project”, clean up the desks, wipe the little fingers and watch a bunch of disappointed kids as their crayons are taken away from them and the math & reading & spelling takes reign.
